    139. Afghanistan: Liberated for This

        [Editor’s Note: The following is from Tony Perkin’s Washington Update by the Family Research Council (www.frc.org). Please read the whole article and then PRAY! “Americans will not give their blood and treasure to prop up new Islamic fundamentalist regimes.”]

        The Bush administration assured us late last year that the new Iraqi constitution would not threaten religious liberty. This, despite the provisions saying no law could be passed that was "inconsistent with Islam." Our concern that such promises of religious freedom will be meaningless in light of Islamic law is once again justified by religious persecution in Afghanistan. The Afghan constitution, adopted after America liberated that country from the Taliban, has a provision similar to that of the new Iraqi constitution. Now, we receive a horrifying report of Abdul Rahman, 41, who is on trial for his life in Kabul, Afghanistan. Rahman's crime? He has admitted converting to Christianity. That there should even be such a trial is an outrage. How can we congratulate ourselves for liberating Afghanistan from the rule of jihadists only to be ruled by Islamists who kill Christians? Such a "trial" is a flagrant violation of Article 18 of the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights--which the current Afghan government even incorporated into its constitution. Article 18 reads: "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance." President Bush should immediately send Vice President Cheney or Secretary Rice to Kabul to read Hamid Kharzai's government the riot act. Americans will not give their blood and treasure to prop up new Islamic fundamentalist regimes. Democracy is more than purple thumbs.

        138. South Dakota Starts Up The Debate
        “South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds recently signed into law a measure that would prohibit abortion except when necessary to save the life of the mother… Rounds quickly went underground, informing the press that he would grant no further interviews on the measure…No wonder: Republicans around the country treated Rounds to an old-fashioned shunning… Not a single Republican of stature uttered so much as an ‘attaboy.’

        137. Abortion Issue Moves to States

        “The hate crimes bill, an amendment to the Child Safety Act (H.R. 3132), was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on September 15. Titled ‘The Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act,’ the bill is now under review in the U.S. Senate (S. 1145). This bill:
        • Lays the groundwork for a severe threat to religious freedom.
        • Expands federal power enormously into cases traditionally handled by the states.
        • Creates “thought crime,” which has no place in American law.
        • Violates the concept of equal protection under the law.
        • Tempts law enforcement agencies into giving some crime victims’ cases more priority than others.
        • Brings hate crime politics into the schools.
        • Is unnecessary, given 1) there is no evidence that such cases are not receiving proper prosecution and sentencing, and that 2) hate crimes have been decreasing over the past three years, not increasing
        “The hate crimes bill undermines equal protection; is a direct threat to freedom; would federalize criminal law, and would transform the nature of criminal law by criminalizing thoughts and beliefs instead of actions
