“All Politics is Local”

Dear Brethren & Others:

It is said that former House Speaker Tip O’Neill loved to say, “All politics is local.” While I was not a fan of the former Speaker I do agree with his statement, especially with the off-year elections just around the corner.

Last week I introduced you to a godly candidate for Boise City Council, Brandi Swindell. She is a wonderful example of how God raises up His people for “such a time as this.” While opponents of candidates such as Miss Swindell complain that value-driven candidates are of no consequence at the city level, do not forget how Mayor Gavin Newson caused great havoc in San Francisco, as well as the rest of the nation, by issuing “marriage” licenses to thousands of homosexuals.

The election of local officials does have an effect upon the actions of politicians at the state and federal levels. Many state and federal officials got their start in politics by running for a local office like city council, school board, sheriff, etc. Plus, if state officials notice local politics are heading in a certain directions, they will be more inclined to head in the same direction.

A good indication that local politics are important is how the opposition reacts. Miss Swindell is being vilified by the left saying she will “divide Boise with her extremist rhetoric” and “drag city government into the mire with her right-wing pet causes.” Many are waging a battle against Miss Swindell’s candidacy because of her godly stance and not because they are for her opponent. The dirty politics are so bad that a Web site has “pictures” of Miss Swindell’s head superimposed upon the bodies of scantily clad models.

If this ugliness can happen in a city like Boise, Idaho, what about the rest of the nation?

Rev. Bryan Fischer of Keep the Commandments Coalition (see http://www.kccidaho.blogspot.com/) writes: “The Bible tells us that our ultimate battle is not against flesh and blood, but against unseen spiritual powers… For those of you who believe in the power of prayer, especially those of you who are pastors, this might be a good time to ask for God's protection over Brandi [Swindell] and her efforts to serve God in the public arena. We do not know what God's will is for Brandi in this election season; that will be made clear on November 8.” I add my AMEN! to Rev. Fishcer’s statement which can be said for all local godly candidates.
