No principle of justice regulates his conduct. Complaint only provokes further exactions. Resistance kindles his unfeeling heart into savage fury. Poor and miserable indeed are the people, whom divine anger has placed under his misrule. "Thus indeed injustice is suffered to reign upon a wide scale. A whole nation is afflicted by the ruthless tyranny of one man. Perhaps the scourge extends from the wicked ruler downwards, through all its gradations, to the petty minions of his caprice, delegated with the sword of power." "Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place." Proverbs 24:15 "Hatred to the righteous is deeply rooted in the wicked man. He imagines, especially if he be in power, that he can tyrannize over them with impunity. But it is venturing upon a hazardous course - 'He that toucheth you, toucheth the apple of mine eye.' (Zech. 2:8)." Commenting on Psalm 113:7a ("He raises up the poor out of the dust."), Charles Spurgeon** encourages: "When no hand but His can help, He interposes and the work is done."
