Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted (Hab 1:4). Determined to maintain their stranglehold on the U.S. Senate, Democrats spent millions to reelect scandal-ridden New Jersey Senator Bob Torricelli. Yet Torricelli's ethics problems precipitated a collapse of support for the Senator causing Republican Douglas Forrester to lead in the polls by 20 points on Sunday. Even though New Jersey law expressly prohibits changes to the ballot within 51 days of any election, Gov. James McGreevey (D) hastily convened a strategy meeting of leading Democrat politicos. Senator Tom Daschle (SD-D) told Torricelli to quit and Torricelli dutifully withdrew. Democrats next declared former Senator Frank Lautenberg their new candidate. Wednesday, the Democrat-controlled New Jersey Supreme Court ordered printed ballots bearing Torricelli's name be replaced with ballots carrying Lautenberg's name. Puritan Scholar Matthew Henry's comments on Habakkuk 1:4 warn of judgment for rulers and nations that flagrantly spurn the law: "The prophet... laments the iniquity of the times... [S]trife ran so strongly as to [invite] defiance to the restraints and regulations of laws and the administration of justice... Because God did not [bring immediate correction] against them, nobody else would; therefore the law is slacked, is silent; it breathes not; its pulse beats not; it intermits, and judgment does not go forth as it should; no cognizance is taken of those crimes, no justice done upon the criminals; nay, wrong judgment proceeds; [AND] if appeals be made to the courts...the righteous [are] condemned and the wicked justified, so that the remedy proves the worst disease... "[T]he stream of justice is dried up... [Such] abounding of wickedness in a nation is a very great eyesore to good people... if they did not see it, they could not believe it... it shocks the faith of good men... [But] We must not think it strange if wickedness be [allowed] to prevail... God has reasons... yet we... must believe the day will come, though it may be long deferred, when the cry of sin will be heard against those that do wrong and the cry of prayer for those that [allow] it... [In due time] an amazing punishment [shall come], so strange and surprising... that it shall not be paralleled among the heathen... sorer and heavier than what God has usually inflicted upon the nations that know him not...
