PUT YOUR FAITH INTO
ACTION WITH PRAYER
On your walls, O Jerusalem,
I have appointed watchmen (Is 62:6).
The following is an update
from our friend, Rev. Rob Schenck:
What a difference one week can make! On March 18 I was leading
prayers outside the Florida hospice where Terri Schiavo lay dying
after her feeding tube was removed. One week later, I woke up
in the neurological intensive care unit of Allegheny General
Hospital in Pittsburgh after having brain surgery. I felt a lot
closer to Terri at that moment--people were barking orders at
me and I could not communicate back to them; I was utterly dependent
on others for everything including feeding me and putting tubes
in me so I could go to the bathroom. It was a lesson in humility.
The most important aspects to the operation were a success, but
it did leave me with what are hoped to be only temporary complications:
I am having trouble swallowing and speaking, and I have significant
facial weakness on my left side. I am less than two weeks into
the six-week recovery period, so there is plenty of time for
these things to resolve themselves.
This has not been an easy ordeal, though. It has been painful
and disorienting, but the worst part has been my being sidelined
during the last days of Terri Schiavo's life. Of course, it's
not that our ministry was inactive. My brother, Paul, was extremely
busy up on Capitol Hill, making the talk-show rounds and leading
our ministry team while Rev. Pat Mahoney was directing things
in Florida. It was a very demanding and exhausting time for them.
They also had to spend a lot of money keeping this terrible event
in front of lawmakers, the courts, and, most especially, God's
people--thank you for your generosity during this time. We are
all very saddened and dismayed by the fact that an innocent woman
(who was not even terminally ill) was put to death cruelly by
starvation and dehydration after a court ordered it! But we will
take Terri's martyrdom and use it to ensure that the ungodly,
unaccountable, run-away judiciary is finally reigned in! (More
about this when I get a little stronger.)
I've used up just about all the energy I have. My wife, Cheryl,
has been staying home from work to take excellent care of me
and we appreciate so deeply all your prayers and good wishes.
I'll be back soon with more. For now, I sit on the sidelines
praying and coaching your excellent Faith and Action mission
team.
I am always,
Your grateful missionary to elected and appointed officials,
