THE PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION

God Save George W. Bush & The United States of America

Jehoiada made a covenant - that he, the people and the king would be the Lord's people... the people of the land rejoiced. And the city was quiet… (2 Chr 23:16-24 paraphrase).

For the LORD is our Judge… Lawgiver… [and] King; He will save us (Is 33:22).

The Presidential Inauguration is a time of profound solemnity and celebration. Yet this Inauguration will be troubled by America’s sharp cultural divide, the reality of war, and a host of domestic and international challenges. God-fearing Americans ought wholeheartedly to bless and pray for President George W. Bush.

·       Bush-haters will attempt to disrupt the Inauguration and parade. Bitter Bush adversaries have and will try to defame the President throughout his term.

·       Islamist terrorists, despite unprecedented security measures, still pose a threat to crowds at inaugural events and to Americans everywhere.

·       Sadly, the Episcopalian minister chosen to offer the inaugural invocation “is a liberal thinker who preaches inclusiveness in his sermons… and welcomes same-sex couples in his congregation” (http://www.baltimoresun.com/features/lifestyle/bal-te.to.reverend19jan19,1,2530929.story?ctrack=2&cset=true ).

·       Inaugural ceremonies in the west evolve from the historic coronations in Scripture. The kings of Israel swore allegiance to God and His Word, and renewed the covenant between God, the King and people, pledging their mutual accountability. President Bush, like every other President, will place his hand on the Bible and swear on oath, “so help me God” (see http://www.nationalreview.com/script/printpage.asp?ref=/comment/kengor200501180831.asp ).

So the President is responsible to God and to us. We, too, are responsible – to pray for the President and keep him accountable to God. As he takes his oath, we ought to pledge our troth to our Country and Constitution, but above all, to King Jesus. Only His blessing will enable our President and nation to prosper.
